Hear me, dear One — I feel all alone out here, like someone lost in a wide, empty wood. How can I find comfort without You, You who are so completely free and at ease? My heart can't settle apart from what it loves; the night stretches long and hard. Sleep won't come, because it's Your love I ache for — so please, hear my little prayer. Without the One I love, no one truly knows me, and I call out alone. Yet the soul meets its Beloved the moment the meeting is granted.
Stanza ||1|| of a Nanak Chhant. Sun naah prabhoo ... aykalrhee ban maahay — "alone in the wilderness." Vayparvaahay — the "carefree, self-sufficient" One (a tender Gurbani epithet). The loneliness is real and voiced honestly, then met with the promise of grace: milai milaaee — union when it is given. The ache is validated, not dismissed, then gently answered.
When you feel lonely, what small thing helps you feel a little less alone?
