Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Rest your attention gently at the feet of the One. Then something closed inside you begins to open, like a flower that was turned downward slowly turning up to bloom.
And the One who fills the whole universe becomes clear and near. Nanak says: this happens through the teaching of the saints.
Rest your attention lovingly on the One, and a closed heart opens like a flower turning up to bloom.
A tender Shalok about waking up. Chit chitva-o charnaarbind — fix your mind on the charnaarbind, the lotus feet. That is a picture of humble nearness to the One. OoDh kaval bigsaant — the ooDh kaval, the upside-down lotus of the heart, blossoms. The closed heart that hung face-down turns up and opens. Think of a flower that droops at night and lifts its face when the sun comes.
The second line brings it down to earth. Pargat bha-ay aapeh gobind — the One becomes clear and present, sant mataant, through the teaching of the saints. So the blossoming is not a lonely effort. It comes through the words of the saints.
The whole verse is one gentle motion. Attention is placed with love. A heart opens like a flower. The One becomes clear.
What helps your own heart feel more “open” — turned up toward the light instead of closed and turned down?
