In plain words

Nanak says: the one who keeps the Naam close — inside and out, with love — and takes the Perfect Guru's teaching to heart joins the Sangat, and life stays bright and whole.

Loving the One that fully leaves no room for the dark and the falling; the Sangat keeps you in the light.

Keeping the Naam close with love, inside and out, and staying in the Sangat keeps your life bright and whole.
The deeper layer

Keeping the Naam close with love and staying in the Sangat keeps your life in the light.

Naam simran and saadhsang, the Sangat, go together here. Naam naam jap japi-aa antar baahar rang — holding the Naam with love inwardly and outwardly: keeping it close, with love, far from empty repetition. Narak naahi, "does not fall into hell," becomes no room for the dark and the falling: the Sangat keeps you in the light. The "Nanna" Pauri that follows develops the same protection.

A Question to Sit With

How does the company you keep change how bright or heavy your days feel?
