ਫਾਹੇ ਕਾਟੇ ਮਿਟੇ ਗਵਨ ਫਤਿਹ ਭਈ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤ ॥
faahay kaatay mitay gavan fatih bha-ee man jeet.
The noose of Death is cut, and one's wanderings cease; victory is obtained, when one conquers his own mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਥਿਤ ਪਾਈ ਫਿਰਨ ਮਿਟੇ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥੧॥

O Nanak, eternal stability is obtained from the Guru, and one's day-to-day wanderings cease. ||1||

In plain words

When you win the quiet victory over your own mind, the knots loosen and the restless wandering stops.

Nanak says: from the Guru comes a steadiness that lasts, and the endless back-and-forth of a scattered life finally settles. Master your own heart, and you have won the only battle that matters.

The only battle that matters is the quiet one with your own mind — win it, and the restless wandering finally settles.
The deeper layer

Win over your own mind, and the knots loosen and the wandering stops.

Faahay kaatay mitay gavan — the noose cut, wandering ended — fatih bha-ee man jeet, "victory when the mind is won." The faahaa, the noose, appears here as knots that loosen. Gur tay thit paa-ee — steadiness from the Guru — firan mitay, daily wanderings cease. The "Nanna" Pauri's inner victory returns here, and next comes the "Faffa" Pauri, on this precious human life.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small victory over your own mind — a habit, a mood — that would make your days feel steadier?
