This Human Life Is a Rare Gift; Use It Well

pa-orhee.
Pauree:
fafaa firat firat too aa-i-aa.
FAFFA: After wandering and wandering for so long, you have come;
darulabh dayh kalijug meh paa-i-aa.
in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, you have obtained this human body, so very difficult to obtain.
fir i-aa a-osar charai na haathaa.
This opportunity shall not come into your hands again.
naam japahu ta-o katee-ah faasaa.
So chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the noose of Death shall be cut away.
fir fir aavan jaan na ho-ee.
You shall not have to come and go in reincarnation over and over again,
aykeh ayk japahu jap so-ee.
if you chant and meditate on the One and Only Lord.
karahu kirpaa parabh karnaihaaray.
Shower Your Mercy, O God, Creator Lord,
mayl layho naanak baychaaray. ||38||
and unite poor Nanak with Yourself. ||38||

In plain words

After a long, long journey, here you are — given this precious human life, so rare and full of possibility.

This chance is a gift; make good use of it. Keep the Naam in mind, and the knots that bind you come loose; the restless coming and going quiets down when your heart rests in the One.

Please, kind Maker, pour Your mercy — draw Nanak close and hold him. He trusts that You will.

This human life is a rare gift after a long journey — make good use of it by keeping the One in mind, and trust the mercy that draws you close.
The deeper layer

This human life is a rare gift after a long journey; use it to remember the One.

Faffa is the "precious human life" Pauri. Firat firat too aa-i-aa — after long wandering, you have arrived; durlabh dayh... paa-i-aa, this hard-to-obtain human body is granted. The kalijug, the Dark Age, stays in the background of a long journey. Naam japahu ta-o katee-ah faasaa — remembering the Naam loosens the knots, the faasaa or noose. The aavan jaan, the coming-and-going of rebirth, is a restless coming and going that quiets. The close is a tender first-person prayer, mayl layho... baychaaray — "unite me." Baychaaray, "poor one," becomes a plea of trust, sure of being answered: empty hands held out to grace.

A Question to Sit With

If this life is a rare and precious gift, what is one thing you'd most want to do with it?
