Shower Your Mercy upon servant Nanak, O God, that he may dwell in peace with the True Guru. ||1||

In plain words

My mind and body are soaked through with love for the One I love — every hour of the day and night.

Pour Your kindness over Nanak, so he can rest in peace, close to the True Guru.

Love for the One runs quietly all day and all night, and it leads to rest.
The deeper layer

A gentle Shalok of longing and rest. Athay pahar lagann — "all eight watches" of the day, meaning constantly — is a love that runs quietly underneath everything, every hour, special day or not. Then comes the request, kirpaa dhaar... sukh vasann — "pour Your kindness, that I may dwell in peace" — and the outcome rests in grace: peace is asked for and received, not seized. Dwelling or resting in peace beside the True Guru is one of the softest images in the Vaar — love that leads to rest instead of striving.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love steadily, even when you are not thinking about it?
