Verse 1 of 5

See One Reality in All and the Walls Stop Mattering

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ॥
ga-orhee kabeer jee.
Gauree, Kabir Jee:
ਜਬ ਹਮ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
jab ham ayko ayk kar jaani-aa.
When I realize that there is One, and only One Lord,
ਤਬ ਲੋਗਹ ਕਾਹੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
tab logah kaahay dukh maani-aa. ||1||
why then should the people be upset? ||1||

In plain words

Once I truly understood that there is only One — one single reality flowing through everything and everyone — a strange thing happened: I stopped fitting into the old boxes people used to sort each other. Why should that upset anyone? All I did was see that we are not really separate.

When you truly see that everyone shares one reality, the old walls between people simply stop mattering.
The deeper layer

Jab ham ayko ayk kar jaani-aa — "when I knew the One as only One." This is Kabir's Ik Onkar lived out: once you see one reality everywhere, the walls of caste, rank, and rivalry stop making sense. Verse 1 gently notes that this can unsettle people (logah kaahay dukh maani-aa) — because letting go of the boxes threatens those invested in them. It is a quiet, revolutionary line.

A Question to Sit With

What is a way people are sorted into groups that stops making sense once you remember everyone is deeply connected?
