Easy to Stay Busy and Never Ask the Deeper Question

ਹਰੀ ਅੰਗੂਰੀ ਗਦਹਾ ਚਰੈ ॥

In plain words

Picture a donkey munching fresh green grass. Each morning it gets up and brays happily — busy and pleased, but never asking what it's all for.

It's easy to stay comfortably busy and never turn to the deeper questions — like a donkey happy in its field.
The deeper layer

Kabir smiles at a life spent only on the surface.

The riddle goes on with farmyard pictures. Haree angooree gadhaa charai — the donkey grazes on green grass. Nit uth haasai heegai marai — every day it gets up, laughs and brays, and then its life is over.

The donkey is happy with its grass and its noise. It never wakes up inside. Think of scrolling a phone all evening. It feels fine, and then the night is gone.

Kabir keeps the picture funny and strange. But he is pointing at something very human. It is easy to live like that: comfortable, going through the motions. We can stay busy so we never have to ask the deeper question: what is all this for?

A Question to Sit With

Do you ever stay busy with easy things to avoid a bigger question you'd rather not think about?
