Real Trust Frees You From Chasing Approval

ਅਬ ਕਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਤੋਰਾ ॥
ab kaho raam bharosaa toraa.
If I say now that my trust is in You alone, Lord,
ਤਬ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾ ਕਵਨੁ ਨਿਹੋਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tab kaahoo kaa kavan nihoraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
then what obligation do I have to anyone else? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Now I can truly say my trust rests in You alone, Beloved.

So I no longer have to beg or bargain with anyone else to feel safe.

Real trust in the One frees you from having to win everyone else's approval.
The deeper layer

Real trust in the One frees you from needing everyone else's approval.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Ab kaho raam bharosaa toraa — now I say my bharosaa, my trust, is in You alone.

Tab kaahoo kaa kavan nihoraa — then what do I owe anyone else? Nihoraa is a worried debt, the feeling that you must keep someone pleased.

This is freedom from anxious people-pleasing. Think of someone who keeps changing their opinion to match whoever is talking. They are tired all the time. Trust in the One means you no longer have to buy your safety from everybody else.

A Question to Sit With

How would it feel not to have to earn everyone's approval to feel okay?
