The Truest Joy Is Drinking the Sweetness of the One

ਉਆ ਕਉ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਹਜ ਮਤਵਾਰਾ ॥
u-aa ka-o kahee-ai sahj matvaaraa.
He alone is called intoxicated with intuitive peace and poise,
ਪੀਵਤ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
peevat raam ras gi-aan beechaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
who drinks in the juice of the Lord's essence, contemplating spiritual wisdom. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

There is a person you could truly call joyfully carefree.

It is not from anything they drank. It comes from drinking in the sweetness of the One and resting in quiet wisdom.

The truest joy comes not from anything outside, but from drinking in the sweetness of the One.
The deeper layer

This one says the truest joy comes from drinking in the sweetness of the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. U-aa ka-o kahee-ai sahj matvaaraa — call that person carried away by sahaj. Sahaj means natural, easy calm.

Kabir plays with the picture of someone happily swept away. But he puts all of it in raam ras, the sweetness of the One, and in gi-aan beechaaraa, thinking about true wisdom.

Think of the happy, clear feeling after a great swim on a sunny morning. This joy clears the mind instead of clouding it.

A Question to Sit With

What is a joy that leaves you clearer and calmer, not foggy?
