Verse 2 of 4

Rest in the One and the Outside Can't Shake You

ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਤਨੁ ਜਰਿ ਕੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
raam japat tan jar kee na jaa-ay.
When I chant the Lord's Name, what does it matter if my body burns?
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਚਿਤੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam chit rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My consciousness remains absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I hold the Beloved's Name, it does not matter what happens to my body.

My awareness stays soaked through with the Name, at peace.

When your awareness rests in the One, the outside can't shake your peace.
The deeper layer

When your mind rests in the Name, what happens outside cannot shake you.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It shows Kabir's fearlessness. Whatever happens to the body, his mind stays samaa-ay, soaked in the Name. It is like a cloth dyed all the way through, so the color cannot wash out.

When you are that steady inside, the outside cannot knock you over. Think of a tree with deep roots in a storm. This is sahaj, a natural, deep calm that holds firm.

A Question to Sit With

What steadies you inside so much that outside troubles lose their power?
