You Needn't Master Techniques, Only Loosen Your Grip

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਦੁਪਦੇ ॥
ga-orhee kabeer jee dupday.
Gauree, Kabir Jee, Du-Padas:
ਨਾ ਮੈ ਜੋਗ ਧਿਆਨ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
naa mai jog Dhi-aan chit laa-i-aa.
I have not practiced Yoga, or focused my consciousness on meditation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
bin bairaag na chhootas maa-i-aa. ||1||
Without renunciation, I cannot escape Maya. ||1||

In plain words

I never mastered yoga, or trained my mind in long, deep meditation.

And I know that without letting go of grasping, the pull of the passing world doesn't loosen on its own.

You don't need to master techniques — but you do need to loosen your grip.
The deeper layer

You do not need to master special practices, but you do need to loosen your grip.

This shabad is a Du-Pada, a short song in two parts. Kabir begins with honesty that puts you at ease. Naa mai jog dhi-aan chit laa-i-aa — I have not practiced yoga, and I have not trained my mind in long meditation.

He is not confessing something wrong. He is just being real.

Bin bairaag na chhootas maa-i-aa — without bairaag, letting go, maya does not release me. Maya is the ever-changing world that keeps pulling at us.

Think of holding a hot pan handle. No clever trick makes it stop hurting. You simply have to let go.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you've been gripping so tightly you haven't let it teach you anything?
