A Life Leans Best When It Leans on the One

ਕੈਸੇ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥
kaisay jeevan ho-ay hamaaraa.
How have I passed my life?
ਜਬ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jab na ho-ay raam naam aDhaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I have not taken the Lord's Name as my Support. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How am I meant to really live —

if I don't lean the whole weight of my life on the Beloved's Name?

A life leans best when it leans on the One.
The deeper layer

A life leans best when it leans on the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It names the ache.

Kaisay jeevan ho-ay hamaaraa — how does my life even work? Jab na ho-ay raam naam adhaaraa — when the Name is not my adhaar, my support.

Kabir asks this gently and honestly. It is not blaming himself. It is a longing turned into a question.

Think of a young plant tied to a stick so it can grow straight. Without the stick, it flops over. The question opens the heart toward what it is missing.

A Question to Sit With

What do you lean on when things get hard — and is it strong enough to hold you?
