Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 334
Verse 5 of 6

The One Needs Nothing and Gives Without End

ਸਭੁ ਕੋਊ ਕਹੈ ਜਾਸੁ ਕੀ ਬਾਤਾ ॥
sabh ko-oo kahai jaas kee baataa.
Everyone speaks of Him; He is All-powerful.
ਸੋ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥੁ ਨਿਜ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਦਾਤਾ ॥੪॥
so samrath nij pat hai daataa. ||4||
He is His Own Master; He is the Giver. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone speaks of the One, the One who can do anything.

The One answers to no one else, and simply gives and gives.

The One is all-capable, needs nothing, and gives without end.
The deeper layer

The One can do anything, needs nothing, and never stops giving.

Sabh ko-oo kahai jaas kee baataa — everyone speaks of the One. So samrath nij pat hai daataa. Samrath means able to do anything. Nij pat means its own master, depending on no one. Daataa means the Giver.

This is a source that never runs dry. It needs nothing from outside itself. Think of a spring bubbling up from deep in the ground, not a bucket someone has to keep refilling. When you lean here, you lean on what cannot fail you.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to rely on something that never runs out?
