Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Settle just one puzzle for me, Beloved,

if you'd like any work at all from the one who serves you.

Sometimes one honest question, asked with love, is the whole prayer.
The deeper layer

Kabir asks the One to settle just one puzzle for him, with the playful trust of a willing helper.

This shabad by Kabir opens on its Rahao, the "pause" line and the center of the shabad. Jhagraa ayk nibayrahu raam — settle this one quarrel for me, O Lord. Ja-o tum apnay jan sou kaam — if You want any work from Your servant. Kabir is being a little playful. It is like saying, "If you want my help, first answer my one question."

His one question turns into a string of "which is greater?" puzzles. Their real purpose is to point past all comparing, to the Source of everything.

A Question to Sit With

What is one big question you'd love to have answered if you could ask anything?
