Verse 3 of 4

Strip Away the Changing and the Presence Remains

ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਦੋਊ ਤਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਤਹ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
araDh uraDh do-oo tah naahee raat dinas tah naahee.
Neither lower nor upper worlds are there; neither day nor night are there.
ਜਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਵਨੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਹਾ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
jal nahee pavan paavak fun naahee satgur tahaa samaahee. ||2||
There is no water, wind or fire; there, the True Guru is contained. ||2||

In plain words

In that deep stillness there is no up and no down, no day and no night.

There is no water, no wind, no fire — and yet the wise, guiding Presence is fully there, holding it all.

Strip away every changing thing, and what remains is not nothing — it is the living Presence.
The deeper layer

This one says: take away everything that changes, and the living Presence is still there.

Kabir keeps taking away pairs. AraDh uraDh do-oo tah naahee — low and high, both are gone there. Raat dinas tah naahee — no night and no day. Then he takes away even the elements. Jal nahee pavan paavak fun naahee — no water, no wind, no fire.

What is left? Satgur tahaa samaahee — the True Guru lives there. That means the true, guiding Presence.

Here is the gentle surprise. When you clear away every changing thing, you do not find emptiness. You find the living Guide. Think of a room after all the noisy guests go home. It is not empty. The one who loves you is still sitting there.

A Question to Sit With

When everything noisy falls quiet, what do you notice is still there with you?
