When Heart and Name Meet, Something Lasting Begins

ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿ ਏਹੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਿ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
saaDh milai siDh paa-ee-ai ke ayhu jog ke bhog.
Meeting with the Holy, the perfection of the Siddhas is obtained. What good is Yoga or indulgence in pleasures?
ਦੁਹੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥
duhu mil kaaraj oopjai raam naam sanjog. ||2||
When the two meet together, the business is conducted, and the link with the Lord's Name is established. ||2||

In plain words

When you keep good, wise company, real understanding grows.

It gives far more than any clever technique or passing pleasure could.

When your heart and the One's Name come together, something true is set in motion,

and a lasting bond is formed.

When your heart and the Name come together, something true and lasting is set in motion.
The deeper layer

Good company and the Name, together, are what really work.

SaaDh milai siDh paa-ee-ai — meeting the good and wise, you gain siDh, true fulfilment. The Siddhas were yogis famous for special powers. Kabir says real fulfilment comes from good company instead. Ke ayhu jog ke bhog — so what good is jog, a technique of body and breath, or bhog, chasing pleasure? Good company counts for more than both.

Duhu mil kaaraj oopjai — when two meet, the real work gets done. Kaaraj means the task, the business at hand. The two are the seeking heart and the Name. Raam naam sanjog — the bond with the Name is formed. It echoes the flame picture from before. Two things join, and something bigger comes alive. Think of two friends who pair up on a project and make something neither could make alone.

A Question to Sit With

How does keeping good company help true understanding grow in you?
