A Simple Song Can Carry the Deepest Truth

ਲੋਗੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਇਹੁ ਗੀਤੁ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਤਉ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
log jaanai ih geet hai ih ta-o barahm beechaar.
People believe that this is just a song, but it is a meditation on God.
ਜਿਉ ਕਾਸੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਾਨਸ ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ॥੩॥
ji-o kaasee updays ho-ay maanas martee baar. ||3||
It is like the instructions given to the dying man at Benares. ||3||

In plain words

People might hear these words and think, "Oh, it is just a song."

But it is far more than that. It is a deep reflection on the One.

It is like the sacred words spoken in Banaras to someone at life's end.

What sounds like a simple song can carry the deepest truth of all.
The deeper layer

A simple song can carry the deepest truth.

Log jaanai ih geet hai — people think this is just a song. Ih ta-o barahm beechaar — but it is barahm beechaar, deep thought about the One. Kabir is talking about his own words here.

Then he gives a comparison. In Banaras, sacred words were spoken to people at the end of their lives. Everyone knew those words carried great weight. Kabir mentions this with respect, as a well-known example. His song, he says, is like that. Think of a lullaby a grandmother sings. The tune is light, but the love in it is huge. Do not mistake a light tune for a light meaning.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever found a big, important truth hidden inside something simple, like a song or a story?
