Verse 3 of 5

Carry What Lifts You, Not What Weighs You Down

ਹਉ ਬਨਜਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਉ ਬ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
ha-o banjaaro raam ko sahj kara-o ba-yaapaar.
I am the merchant of the Lord; I deal in spiritual wisdom.
ਮੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
mai raam naam Dhan laadi-aa bikh laadee sansaar. ||2||
I have loaded the Wealth of the Lord's Name; the world has loaded poison. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am a trader of the Beloved, and I deal, easily and naturally, in one thing only.

I have loaded up the wealth of the Beloved's Name; the world, meanwhile, loads its wagons with what only weighs it down.

Choose to carry what lifts you, not what only weighs you down.
The deeper layer

Ravidas names what he trades in: raam naam dhan, the wealth of the Name — held "in sahaj," easily and naturally, not by strain. He contrasts his cargo with the world's: the world loads up bikh — literally "poison," but here meaning the things that look valuable yet only burden and dull us (endless wanting, status-chasing). No scolding of people, just a clear-eyed choice: I'd rather carry what lifts me than what weighs me down. A great, kid-friendly image of choosing what to fill your life with.

A Question to Sit With

If your life were a wagon, what would you want to load it with?
