Without the Lord, I cannot live, even for an instant. Unite me with the Guru, so that I may drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How can the One be found, O wise friends? Just seeing it keeps me alive. Without the One I cannot live even a moment -- so join me to the teacher, that I may drink the One's sweetness.

The soul cannot live a moment without the One -- and the teacher is how it drinks.
The deeper layer

This is the heart's cry of the shabad: I cannot live without the One.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad, the line everything else turns around. Think of a fish lifted out of water. It cannot last even a moment. Har bin chasaa na jeevtee — without the One, I cannot live even an instant.

The cry goes to the sant, the wise and loving people of the Sangat, the gathering. It asks them for the Guru, the teacher. The Guru is how one drinks Har Ras, the sweet taste of the One.

And the longing itself drives the search. It is called viraha, the ache of being apart. It is like missing someone so much that you keep looking for them everywhere.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel you genuinely could not live without?
