In plain words

A mother loves watching her child eat. A fish loves to swim in the water. And the true teacher loves to place spiritual food right into the mouth of the student.

As naturally as a mother loves to feed her child, the teacher loves to feed the student's soul.
The deeper layer

The Guru loves to feed the student's soul, the way a mother loves to feed her child.

Guru Ram Das often teaches with pictures of love. He does it in an eight-verse song in Siree Raag too, which has five of them. Here each picture pairs a love that comes by instinct with the love between the Guru and the GurSikh, the Guru's student.

Think of a mother watching her child take a bite of her cooking. Her face lights up. The fish loves water in the same easy way.

Guru Ram Das often shows the Guru feeding the student. Understanding is food you are given, not something you grab. This is Gurprasad, the Guru's grace.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life "feeds" you -- not food, but something your spirit needs?
