Meeting His Lovers Lifts Sorrow All by Itself

ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਹਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

Meeting with them, my sorrows depart. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If only I could meet those humble servants of the One, my beloved. The moment I meet them, my sorrows lift.

Meeting those who love the One lifts sorrow all by itself.
The deeper layer

The singer longs to meet people who love the One, because being near them makes sorrow lift.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad, the idea everything else circles around. Jin mili-aa dukh jaahi hamaaray — meeting them, my sorrows go.

The ache here is viraha, the ache of missing someone you love. Usually it is aimed at the One. Here it reaches toward the Sangat, the company of good and loving people. For Guru Ram Das the two belong together. Loving the One and loving the One's people are the same love.

Think of walking into a room where a close friend is waiting. Your heavy day feels lighter before anyone says a word.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a person whose presence alone makes your troubles feel lighter?
