With Nothing of Your Own, the Teacher Still Saves

kichh roop nahee kichh jaat naahee kichh dhang na mayraa.
I have no beauty, no social status, no manners.
ki-aa muhu lai bolah gun bihoon naam japi-aa na tayraa.
With what face am I to speak? I have no virtue at all; I have not chanted Your Name.
ham paapee sang gur ubray punn satgur kayraa. ||2||
I am a sinner, saved only by the Company of the Guru. This is the generous blessing of the True Guru. ||2||

In plain words

I have no beauty, no rank, no fine manners. With what face could I even speak? I have no goodness of my own, and I have not kept your Name. A sinner like me is saved only in the company of the teacher.

With no beauty, status, or virtue of your own, the company of the teacher still saves you.
The deeper layer

The singer sets down every badge people use to feel important, and finds that grace still comes.

Beauty, family rank, fine manners: one by one, each is put aside. None of them is what gives a person worth. Everyone stands on the same ground.

What saves the singer is sang gur, the company of the Guru. Picture a new kid at school with no friends yet, who gets pulled into the lunch table by someone kind. They did nothing to earn it. They were simply welcomed.

That is how grace works. Humility that claims nothing is exactly what grace meets.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to be valued for nothing you achieved -- just welcomed?
