Verse 4 of 5

Given Everything, We Imagine We Made Ourselves

sabh jee-o pind mukh nak dee-aa vartan ka-o paanee.
He gave all beings souls, bodies, mouths, noses and water to drink.
ann khaanaa kaparh painan dee-aa ras an bhogaanee.
He gave them corn to eat, clothes to wear, and other pleasures to enjoy.
jin dee-ay so chit na aavee pasoo ha-o kar jaanee. ||3||
But they do not remember the One who gave them all this. The animals think that they made themselves! ||3||

In plain words

The One gave every creature its soul, its body, its mouth and nose, water to drink. It gave grain to eat, clothes to wear, pleasures to enjoy. And still they do not remember the Giver -- foolish creatures, thinking they made themselves!

We are given everything, down to our breath -- yet forget, and imagine we made ourselves.
The deeper layer

The One gives us everything, and we still forget the Giver.

Our life, our body, our mouth and nose, water to drink, food, clothes, and every good thing all come as gifts. Yet we take them for granted. Think of a birthday party where someone opens every present without looking to see who gave it.

Then comes a sharp line. Pasoo ha-o kar jaanee — the creatures think they made themselves. This is the ego's biggest mistake. The ego is the "me-first" feeling. It looks at a life that was given and calls it self-made.

A Question to Sit With

What have you been given that you sometimes act as if you made on your own?
