The Teacher's Word Cuts the Noose of Death

ga-orhee gu-aarayree mehlaa 5.
Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:
gur kaa bachan sadaa abhinaasee.
The Guru's Word is eternal and everlasting.
gur kai bachan katee jam faasee.
The Guru's Word cuts away the noose of Death.
gur kaa bachan jee-a kai sang.
The Guru's Word is always with the soul.

Through the Guru's Word, one is immersed in the Love of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

The teacher's word is eternal, never-ending. The teacher's word cuts the noose of death. The teacher's word is always with the soul. Through the teacher's word, you are soaked in love for the One.

The teacher's word is eternal, cuts the noose of death, and never leaves the soul.
The deeper layer

The Guru's Word lasts forever and stays with you always, even past death.

This song repeats one phrase again and again, like a drumbeat: gur kaa bachan, the Guru's Word. Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, lifts up the Word line by line.

Gur kaa bachan sadaa abhinaasee — the Guru's Word never perishes. Gur kai bachan katee jam faasee — through the Guru's Word, the noose of death is cut. Gur kaa bachan jee-a kai sang — the Guru's Word stays with the soul. Gur kai bachan rachai raam kai rang — through it, one is soaked in the One's rang, the color of love.

Think of a song your family has sung together for years. It stays in you wherever you go. The Word is like that: a companion that never leaves, and that death cannot take away.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a teaching or saying that has stayed with you and never let you down?
