Through the Teacher's Word, No One Is Defeated

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
gur kaa bachan pargat sansaar.
The Guru's Word is revealed in the world.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਾਰਿ ॥
gur kai bachan na aavai haar.
Through the Guru's Word, no one suffers defeat.
jis jan ho-ay aap kirpaal. naanak satgur sadaa da-i-aal. ||4||5||74||
O Nanak, the True Guru is always kind and compassionate, unto those whom the Lord Himself has blessed with His Mercy. ||4||5||74||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The teacher's word is made known in the world. Through it, no one is ever defeated. And the true teacher is always kind to those the One has blessed with mercy.

Through the teacher's word no one is defeated -- and it reaches those grace has blessed.
The deeper layer

Through the Guru's Word no one is defeated, and even the Word itself comes as a gift.

Gur kaa bachan pargat sansaar — the Guru's Word is shown to the whole world. Gur kai bachan na aavai haar — through it, no one is defeated.

Then the last line. Jis jan ho-ay aap kirpaal. naanak satgur sadaa da-i-aal — says Nanak, the True Guru is always kind to the one the One blesses with mercy. So the whole song rests, in the end, on mercy. The Word reaches those the One has favored. Think of sunlight coming through a window. You did not make the sun. You only opened the curtains. Even the Word that lasts forever is a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What is a piece of wisdom you'd want to carry that would keep you from being "defeated"?
