Eyes Fixed on Temptation Never Learn Awe

ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਭੜਵਾਉ ॥
agan paanee bolai bharhvaa-o.
Fire and water join together, and the breath roars in its fury!
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਏਕੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
jihvaa indree ayk su-aa-o.
The tongue and the sex organs each seek to taste.
ਦਿਸਟਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ॥
disat vikaaree naahee bha-o bhaa-o.
The eyes which look upon corruption do not know the Love and the Fear of God.
ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
aap maaray taa paa-ay naa-o. ||2||
Conquering self-conceit, one obtains the Name. ||2||

In plain words

Heat and water meet inside the body and the breath rushes on. The tongue wants its tastes; the body wants its pleasures. Eyes that stare only at what is tempting never learn love or awe. But conquer the puffed-up "me," and the Name is yours.

Eyes fixed only on temptation never learn awe or love; quiet the ego and the Name appears.
The deeper layer

Back to the body's physiology: fire and water and the roaring breath, the engine of appetite. The senses seek to taste, and eyes fixed on corruption never learn awe-and-love, the paired key of all Gauree Mehl 1. The single hinge is haumai: conquer self-conceit and the Name appears -- not earned by force but uncovered when the ego quiets.

A Question to Sit With

What do your eyes and attention get pulled toward? What might you miss because of it?
