Grace Cuts the Chains and Turns Poison to Nectar

jis parsaad maa-i-aa silak kaatee.
By His Grace, the bonds of Maya are cut away.
gur parsaad amrit bikh khaatee.
By Guru's Grace, the bitter poison has become Ambrosial Nectar.
kaho naanak is tay kichh naahee.
Says Nanak, I cannot do anything;
raakhanhaaray ka-o saalaahee. ||4||6||75||
I praise the Lord, the Protector. ||4||6||75||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By grace, the chains of the world's glitter are cut. By grace, the bitter poison turns to nectar. I can do nothing on my own -- I simply praise the One who protects me.

Grace cuts the chains and turns even poison to nectar -- I can only praise the One who does it.
The deeper layer

The close: grace cuts the bonds of Maya and turns poison to nectar (the shabad's image for the alchemy of grace -- cf. the bitter becoming sweet). Guru Arjan's radical humility -- I cannot do anything -- credits everything to the Protector. The jewels-from-dust theme completes: grace transforms.

A Question to Sit With

Has something bitter in your life ever, over time, turned into something sweet?
