In plain words

There's one restlessness that reaches everyone. It shows up in our highs and our lows alike, in feeling on top of the world or down at the bottom.

It touches the rich and the poor, the admired and the ignored — no one's exempt. And at the root of this restlessness is one thing: wanting more and more.

The same restlessness reaches everyone, rich or poor — and its root is wanting more.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan says one restlessness reaches everyone, and its root is wanting more.

The key word of this shabad is bi-aapat. It means "it reaches, it gets into, it troubles." It comes again and again. Here it reaches harakh sog, joy and sorrow. It reaches heaven and hell, the highs and lows of life. It reaches Dhan nirDhan, the rich and the poor, and the admired too. Then the root is named: mool bi-aaDhee bi-aapas lobhaa. The root sickness is lobhaa, greed, the wanting that never ends.

Calling greed a sickness is kind. A sickness is something to heal, not a crime. Think of a phone game that always asks for one more level. That "just one more" feeling can grab anyone, rich or poor, happy or sad.

A Question to Sit With

Do you notice "wanting more" showing up no matter how much you already have?
