The Greatest Treasure May Already Be Your Inheritance

ਪੀਊ ਦਾਦੇ ਕਾ ਖੋਲਿ ਡਿਠਾ ਖਜਾਨਾ ॥
pee-oo daaday kaa khol dithaa khajaanaa.
When I opened it up and gazed upon the treasures of my father and grandfather,
ਤਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
taa mayrai man bha-i-aa niDhaanaa. ||1||
then my mind became very happy. ||1||

In plain words

I opened up the inheritance my father and grandfather left me. I gazed at the treasure inside, and my whole heart lit up. I saw I had a fortune all along.

The greatest treasure may already be yours by inheritance — waiting to be opened and seen.
The deeper layer

The greatest treasure may be something you have already inherited.

Pee-oo daaday kaa khol dithaa khajaanaa — I opened up the treasure of my father and grandfather and looked inside. The Name is pictured as a family inheritance, handed down and waiting. At last the heir opens it and sees it.

Think of finding an old box in your grandparents' cupboard, full of gold coins that were yours all along.

Taa mayrai man bha-i-aa nidhaanaa — then my mind became a treasure-house. This wealth was never something to earn or buy. It was already ours, waiting to be opened and seen. What matters is noticing what you have, not getting something new.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something wise or good that's been handed down in your family that you're only now beginning to value?
