In plain words

Keep the teaching's word close in your heart, and you'll find peace in the presence of the True One.

Hold the teaching close, and peace comes in the felt nearness of the One.
The deeper layer

Keep the Guru's word close in your heart, and you will find peace in the nearness of the One.

Kaho naanak gur mantar chitaar — says Nanak, remember the Guru's mantar. A mantar is a word of teaching you hold in mind. Here, remembering it becomes a calm, settled habit. Think of a song you hum to yourself when you need to feel brave.

Sukh paavahi saachai darbaar — you will find peace at the True Court. A darbaar is a royal court. Here it means the presence of the One, the place where peace is found. It is not a far-off throne room. It is the felt nearness the whole shabad has been building toward.

The shabad began with the fear of distance. It ends in the peace of nearness. The One was never far.

A Question to Sit With

What words or thoughts do you like to hold close when you want to feel steady?
