Taste the Deep and Lesser Things Lose Their Pull

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਹੈ ਆਇਓ ॥
jaa ka-o ras har ras hai aa-i-o.
Those who have enjoyed the flavor of the Lord's sublime essence
ਸੋ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਨਾਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਇਓ ॥੨॥
so an ras naahee laptaa-i-o. ||2||
are not attracted to any other pleasures. ||2||

In plain words

Once you've truly tasted the sweetness of the One, no lesser flavor can grab hold of you anymore. Nothing else can pull you in the same way.

Once you've tasted something truly deep, lesser things simply lose their pull — not by force, but by comparison.
The deeper layer

Once you have tasted the sweetness of the One, lesser pleasures lose their pull.

Ras means flavor, juice, delight. Jaa ka-o ras har ras hai aa-i-o — the one who has tasted har ras, the sweetness of the One. So an ras naahee laptaa-i-o — is not caught by an ras, other flavors.

This is not forcing yourself to go without. It is what happens naturally when you find something deeper. Lesser pulls fade, not because they are forbidden, but because something better has been found. Think of eating a ripe mango fresh from the tree. After that, mango-flavored candy doesn't seem so exciting. It is a picture of a satisfied heart, not a starving one.

A Question to Sit With

Has something wonderful ever made a thing you used to crave suddenly seem small?
