Verse 4 of 5

A Hope That Fades In An Instant

jay kichh aas avar karahi parmitree mat tooN jaaneh tayrai kitai kamm aa-ee.
If you place your hopes in any other, in any friend other than the Lord, then you shall come to know that it is of no use at all.
ih aas parmitree bhaa-o doojaa hai khin meh jhooth binas sabh jaa-ee.
This hope placed in other friends comes from the love of duality. In an instant, it is gone; it is totally false.
mayray man aasaa kar har pareetam saachay kee jo tayraa ghaali-aa sabh thaa-ay paa-ee. ||3||
O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord, your True Beloved, who shall approve and reward you for all your efforts. ||3||

In plain words

If I hang my deepest hope on a friend instead of the One, I'll find it just can't hold the weight.

A hope like that grows out of feeling separate from the One, and it can fade away in a single moment.

So I place my hope in my truest Beloved, who sees every bit of effort I make and never lets it go to waste.

A hope built on feeling separate fades fast; a hope rooted in the One honors every effort you make.
The deeper layer

Bhaa-o doojaa -- “the love of duality” -- is one of Gurbani's key ideas: the sense of being separate from the One, which makes us cling to substitutes. A hope built on that footing is jhooth (unreal) and binas jaa-ee (passes away) in a khin (an instant). Standing against it is the saachaa (true) Beloved who ghaali-aa sabh thaa-ay paa-ee -- places every effort exactly where it belongs and honors it. Friendship stays precious; the deepest ground of your hope is the One.

A Question to Sit With

What effort of yours would you most like to trust is not being wasted?
