The Friends Who Sing Only The Name

ਸੇ ਸੰਤਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥
say santan har kay mayray meet.
Those Saints of the Lord are my friends.
ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kayval naam gaa-ee-ai jaa kai neet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It is their custom to sing only the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who love the One are the friends I want.

Day after day, singing the Name is simply how they live.

Choose friends whose everyday life turns your heart toward what is good.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song.

Say santan har kay mayray meet — those who love the One are my friends. A sant is a good, holy person who lives close to the One.

What marks these friends? Kayval naam gaa-ee-ai jaa kai neet — singing the Name is simply their daily way. It is not just for special days. It is part of every day, like brushing your teeth or eating breakfast.

The Guru picks friends for where they point his heart. Good friends are like a compass. They help you keep facing the right way.

A Question to Sit With

What do your closest friends spend their time and love on?
