Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 12
Verse 3 of 5

Where Doubt And Fear Fall Away

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥
jaa kai mantar har har man vasai.
By their mantra, the Lord, Har, Har, dwells in the mind.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਨਸੈ ॥
jaa kai updays bharam bha-o nasai.
By their teachings, doubt and fear are dispelled.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਾਰ ॥
jaa kai keerat nirmal saar.
By their kirtan, they become immaculate and sublime.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਨੁ ਬਾਂਛੈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥੨॥
jaa kee rayn baaNchhai sansaar. ||2||
The world longs for the dust of their feet. ||2||

In plain words

Near such friends, the One settles into the heart, and doubt and fear quietly slip away.

Their singing is clear and true, and the whole world longs to walk humbly in their footsteps.

Good company can quietly carry away the doubt and fear you came in with.
The deeper layer

The Guru says that good people help the One settle into our hearts and chase away fear.

Jaa kai mantar har har man vasai — through their words, the One comes to live in the mind. A mantar is a word or saying that you keep repeating.

Jaa kai updays bharam bha-o nasai — through their teaching, doubt and fear run off. Updays means teaching. Bharam is doubt, and bha-o is fear.

Keerat means their songs of praise. The verse calls them nirmal saar, pure and true to the core.

The last line says the whole world longs for the dust of their feet. In India, touching someone's feet is a way of showing deep respect. Think of the friend whose calm voice makes a scary storm feel smaller. Everyone wants to be near a person like that.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps your worries settle just by being around them?
