Verse 4 of 5

The Heart-Lotus Opens To The Light

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਊਰਧ ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਾਸ ॥
gur parsaad ooraDh kamal bigaas.
By Guru's Grace, the inverted heart-lotus blossoms forth,
ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥
anDhkaar meh bha-i-aa pargaas.
and the Light shines forth in the darkness.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
jin kee-aa so gur tay jaani-aa.
Through the Guru, know the One who created you.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮੁਗਧ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥
gur kirpaa tay mugaDh man maani-aa. ||3||
By the Guru's Mercy, the foolish mind comes to believe. ||3||

In plain words

By grace, my heart opens like a flower turning upward, and light pours into what was dark.

Through the teaching I come to know the One who made me, and my once-restless mind grows quiet and sure.

Grace opens a closed heart the way light opens a flower.
The deeper layer

The Guru says that by the Teacher's kindness, a closed heart opens like a flower to the light.

Gur parsaad ooradh kamal bigaas — by the Guru's grace, the upside-down heart-lotus blooms. A lotus is a flower that grows in ponds. Picture a flower that had been hanging down, closed tight. Now it turns up and opens in the sunshine.

Andhkaar meh bha-i-aa pargaas — light shines in the darkness. Andhkaar is darkness, and pargaas is light. It is like switching on a lamp in a dark room.

Jin kee-aa so gur tay jaani-aa — through the Guru, we come to know the One who made us.

The verse calls the mind mugadh, which means foolish or muddled. By the Guru's kindness, that muddled mind maani-aa, comes to trust. Understanding is a gift that comes through the Teacher.

A Question to Sit With
