Sikhism·Raag Gond·Shabad 13
Verse 5 of 5

Freedom Comes Through The Teacher

ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥
gur kartaa gur karnai jog.
The Guru is the Creator; the Guru has the power to do everything.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
gur parmaysar hai bhee hog.
The Guru is the Transcendent Lord; He is, and always shall be.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਇਹੈ ਜਨਾਈ ॥
kaho naanak parabh ihai janaa-ee.
Says Nanak, God has inspired me to know this.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥
bin gur mukat na paa-ee-ai bhaa-ee. ||4||5||7||
Without the Guru, liberation is not obtained, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||5||7||

In plain words

The teaching carries the very creative power of the One, able to do all things.

It is the Eternal One, here now and always — and it is through the teaching that real freedom is found.

Real freedom comes through a teaching that shows you the way.
The deeper layer

The Guru says that the Teacher and the Maker are one, and that freedom comes through the Teacher.

Gur kartaa gur karnai jog — the Guru is the Creator, able to do all things. Gur parmaysar hai bhee hog — the Guru is the Highest One, here now and always.

Kaho naanak prabh ihai janaa-ee — Nanak says the One helped him understand this.

The last line is bin gur mukat na paa-ee-ai bhaa-ee. It means that without the Guru, no one finds mukat, freedom. Bhaa-ee means brother or friend.

This line is not a gate that shuts people out. It explains how freedom comes. Think of a dark forest path at night. You need a light to find your way out. The Teacher is that light.

A Question to Sit With

What is a truth someone taught you that set you free in some way?
