Verse 5 of 5

The Name That Carries You Across

ramat raam janam maran nivaarai.
Uttering the Lord's Name, birth and death are finished.
uchrat raam bhai paar utaarai.
Repeating the Lord's Name, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.
sabh tay ooch raam pargaas.
The Luminous Lord is the highest of all.
nis baasur jap naanak daas. ||4||8||10||
Night and day, servant Nanak meditates on Him. ||4||8||10||

In plain words

Holding the Name, the fear of endings loosens, and I am carried safely across every fear.

The bright One is the highest of all — so night and day I keep it close.

Holding the Name loosens the fear of endings and carries you across.
The deeper layer

Ramat raam janam maran nivaarai — the Name eases the whole cycle of endings and beginnings; softened here to the loosening of the fear of endings. Bhai paar utaarai — carried across fear itself. Sabh tay ooch raam pargaas — the One is the highest light. The shabad closes as it began, in ceaseless, loving remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel less afraid when you think about things ending?
