The Five That Cannot Reach The Devotee's Door

ਗੋਂਡ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
gond mehlaa 5.
Gond, Fifth Mehl:
ਉਨ ਕਉ ਖਸਮਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਠਾਕਹਾਰੇ ॥
un ka-o khasam keenee thaakhaaray.
My Lord and Master has held back the five demons.
ਦਾਸ ਸੰਗ ਤੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
daas sang tay maar bidaaray.
He conquered them, and scared them away from the Lord's slave.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਗਤ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gobind bhagat kaa mahal na paa-i-aa.
They cannot find the mansion of the Lord's devotee.
ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
raam janaa mil mangal gaa-i-aa. ||1||
Joining together, the Lord's humble servants sing the songs of joy. ||1||

In plain words

The One holds back the five inner troubles and drives them away from the one who loves it.

They cannot even find the doorway of such a heart — so its people gather and sing songs of pure joy.

The inner troubles that push us around cannot reach a heart at home in the One.
The deeper layer

The 'five' are the familiar inner pulls — anger, greed, attachment, craving, and pride. Here the One is pictured as their master: keenee thaakhaaray — held them back — and maar bidaaray, drove them off, from the one who loves it. The image is not battle-glory but protection: the five mahal na paa-i-aa — cannot find the way into a heart at home in the One. The result is mangal — songs of joy.

A Question to Sit With

What helps anger or worry lose its way to your door?
