Carried Across by Remembering

ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਜਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
raam japat jan paar paray.
Meditating on the Lord, His humble servant is carried across,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
janam janam kay paap haray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and the sins of countless incarnations are taken away. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I remember the One, I am carried safely across.

The wrongs I have carried, life after life, are taken away.

Remembering the One carries you across water you could never cross alone.
The deeper layer

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song, the line it keeps coming back to.

Raam japat jan paar paray — the one who remembers the One is carried across. Picture a wide river you could never swim alone. Then a boat comes and takes you to the other side.

Janam janam kay paap haray — the wrongs of life after life are taken away. The point is not to feel guilty. The point is relief. It is like finally putting down a heavy school bag you have carried all day. The load is set down, and you can walk freely again.

A Question to Sit With

Is there an old mistake you are ready to set down and stop carrying?
