Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I keep the Teacher's teaching close in my heart, like a treasure I never put down.
Held that way, I have crossed over what once felt like an ocean of fire.
The whole tug-of-war of coming and going has quieted in me.
I have settled into an easy, natural stillness with the One.
The Guru says that when you keep the Teacher's words close to your heart, a deep calm settles in.
Gur kay charan ridai ur dhaaray — I hold the Guru's feet in my heart. Holding someone's feet is an old way of showing love and trust. Here it means keeping the Teacher's teaching at the very center of you.
Agan saagar means an ocean of fire. It stands for the burning of always wanting more. The Guru does not fight that ocean. He is carried across it.
Janam maran means birth and death. It is the tiring round of coming and going. That too quiets down.
The last words are sahj samaadh. Sahaj means natural and easy. Samaadh means deep stillness. This is not a forced, strained quiet. It is like a glass of muddy water left alone on the table. The mud settles by itself, and the water turns clear.
What helps you feel calm and settled instead of pulled in every direction?
