The One in Every Place

ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
thaan thanantar ayko su-aamee.
In all places and interspaces, the One, our Lord and Master is contained.

He is the Inner-knower of all hearts.

One whom the Lord blesses with understanding,

chants the Name of God, twenty-four hours a day. ||3||

In plain words

In every place, and in the spaces between places, there is one same Presence.

The One quietly knows what is happening inside every heart.

When the One blesses a person with clear understanding,

they carry the Name with them right through the day, morning to night.

One Presence fills every place, and knows every heart from the inside.
The deeper layer

The Guru says the One is in every place and knows every heart from the inside.

Thaan thanantar ayko su-aamee — in every place, and in the gaps between places, there is one Master. Think of the air in your house. It is in every room, and in the hallways too.

Antarjaamee means the inner-knower. The One is not a faraway watcher. The One knows us the way we know our own thoughts.

Mat means understanding. The verse says it is a gift. It comes by kirpaa, kindness, not as a prize for hard work. And the fruit of that gift is aath pahar, all eight parts of the day. From morning to night, the person keeps the Name close. A whole life turns toward the One.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you notice that same wonder showing up in very different places?
