Verse 3 of 5

The Whole Purpose of a Life

aath pahar har kay gun gaa-o.
Twenty-four hours a day, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
jee-a paraan ko ihai su-aa-o.
This is the purpose of human life.
taj abhimaan jaan parabh sang.
Renounce your egotistical pride, and know that God is with you.
saaDh parsaad har si-o man rang. ||2||
By the Grace of the Holy, let your mind be imbued with the Lord's Love. ||2||

In plain words

All through the day, sing the good qualities of the One.

This is what a human life is really for.

Set down proud, puffed-up feelings, and know the One is right beside you.

In good company, let your heart soak up the color of that love.

The purpose of a life is to keep the One near and let love color your heart.
The deeper layer

Jee-a paraan ko ihai su-aa-o — remembrance is named as the very purpose of being alive. Taj abhimaan asks us to set down abhimaan, the inflated self-importance that makes us feel separate; the moment it drops, jaan prabh sang — we know the One was beside us all along. Man rang, the mind taking on color, is the dye image beloved in Gurbani: love steeps the heart the way dye steeps cloth.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you feel you are really here to do or become?
