Verse 2 of 5

Singing All Day of the One

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗਾਈਐ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ॥
aath pahar gaa-ee-ai gobind.
Twenty-four hours a day, I sing of the Lord of the Universe.
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਜਿੰਦੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tan Dhan parabh kaa parabh kee jind. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My body and wealth belong to God; my soul belongs to God. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All through the day, let us sing of the One who holds the universe.

This body, and all I have, and my very life — all of it belongs to the One.

Let singing of the One be the quiet soundtrack under your whole day.
The deeper layer

The rahau echoes the refrain of the previous shabad almost word for word — tan dhan prabh kaa prabh kee jind — binding the two compositions like verses of one long song. Aath pahar gaa-ee-ai gobind: singing is not a scheduled task but a steady undertone to the whole day. Naming everything as already the One's is, again, the relief of trust rather than a demand for sacrifice.

A Question to Sit With

What is a tune or thought that runs quietly through your day?
