Verse 2 of 5

They Say I Have Thrown It All Away

ਇਹੁ ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਸਗਲੋ ਦ੍ਰਬੁ ਖੋਈ ॥
ih mundee-aa saglo darab kho-ee.
This shaven-headed mendicant has wasted all his wealth.
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨਾਕ ਸਰ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aavat jaat naak sar ho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
All this coming and going has irritated him. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

People shake their heads: look at him, they say, he's let go of everything he had.

All this back-and-forth with holy company has worn out their patience with me. Still, I know what I've found.

Others may think you've thrown it all away, even when your heart knows it has found treasure.
The deeper layer

The rahau voices the criticism head-on: this one has saglo darab kho-ee — lost all his wealth — and all his coming and going with seekers is naak sar ho-ee, exasperating to those around him. Kabir doesn't hide the disapproval he faced. He simply holds steady inside it, trusting what he's found more than what others see.

A Question to Sit With

When people don't understand a choice that matters to you, what helps you stay steady?
