My mind yearns so deeply for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, like the thirsty man without water. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My heart aches to catch even one glimpse of the One — the way a thirsty person aches for water.

A deep longing for the One is itself a kind of nearness.
The deeper layer

Guru Ram Das says his heart longs to see the One the way a thirsty person longs for water.

Har darsan ka-o mayraa man baho taptai — my mind burns with longing for har darsan, a true sight of the One. Ji-o tarikhaavat bin neer — like a thirsty person without water.

Think of coming in from a long, hot soccer game. All you can think about is a cold glass of water. That is the whole verse. It is not sadness for its own sake. It is a longing that already knows what it is reaching for.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you long for so much you can almost taste it?
