Raag Goojaree
Commentary

Raag Goojaree, Fifth Mehl (Guru Arjan)

Breath-by-breath remembrance dissolves anxiety; grace does the decisive move.

The Arc

Continuous remembrance dispels the mind's anxiety (P0). The Pause line promises peace, poise, and gladness — a clean inner place (P1). Good company drives off craving, anger, and pride (P2); the restless mind is steadied by fastening to the unmoving One (P3); and the close credits the decisive move to freely-given grace (P4).

Key Vocabulary

  • breath-by-breath remembrance — the always-available antidote to worry (P0).
  • sukh / sahj / anand — peace, poise, gladness; states of being, not external rewards (P1).
  • craving / anger / pride — the raag's recurring three, dissolved by company (P2).
  • "He Himself has forgiven me" — grace as the decisive initiative (P4).

Themes and Cross-Connections

"Redeem your mind in the Sangat" (P2) is a fresh image — good company buying back a pawned mind — for the block's method of crowding out the worse with the better (Shabad 21, Shabad 32). "Steadied by fastening to the unmoving" (P3) restates the raag's cure for the restless mind. Grace-initiates (P4) is the block's core.

For Raag Goojaree

Anxiety met with breath, compulsion met with company, restlessness met with the unmoving One — and under it all, a grace that already moved first.
