Raag Goojaree, Third Mehl (Guru Amar Das)

The cosmic dance — and the difference between dancing for the glitter and dancing for love.

The Arc

"I dance, and make my mind dance," beginning by clearing the ego (P0); the Pause verse: dance before the Guru, by the Guru's Will — and the One dances through the devotee (P1). The false dance (asleep in Maya, all motion no love) vs the true (wakeful) (P2); the vision widens — angels, sages, seekers all dance (P3); to its cosmic peak — planets, creatures, the four sources all dance (P4); then narrows again to the real dancers, aligned with the Hukam (P5). Devotion is love shown in service, and jeevat marnaa (P6); the sober count — most dance for Maya, the rare are graced (P7); the moment of forgetting is wasted, but grace forgives (P8); and the close lands on sahj, danced home by grace (P9).

Key Vocabulary

  • the inner dance — devotion as a mind moved by love, ego cleared first (P0).
  • "He Himself causes to dance" — the non-dual twist: the One dances through the devotee (P1).
  • true vs Maya's dance — wakeful love vs sleepwalking motion (P2).
  • jeevat marnaa — dead while alive; the ego stilled in a living person (P6).
  • sahj — the effortless peace that is the dance's destination (P9).

Themes and Cross-Connections

This is Goojaree's great DANCE shabad, Mehl 3's companion to Guru Nanak's inner-dance shabads (Aasaa B00C665, B00C709, B00C768). The cosmic-dance vision (P3–P4) is pure Vismaad (philosophy.md). "The One dances through the devotee" (P1) is the raag's non-dual center (B00C1049). Jeevat marnaa (P6) is a project-wide keystone.

For Raag Goojaree

Amar Das gives the raag its most joyful vision: all creation is dancing, and the invitation is to dance consciously — moved by love, not glitter — until motion and rest become one in effortless peace.
