Some wander around the forests, wearing religious robes, but the Fascinating Lord remains distant from them. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some wander the forests in holy robes, and still the One stays far from them.

Leaving the world in holy robes doesn't close the distance to the One — only the heart does.
The deeper layer

Wearing holy clothes and living in the forest does not bring you close to the One. Only the heart does that.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Karat firay ban bhaykh — some people wander in the forests wearing religious robes. They leave their homes and everything behind. Yet mohan rahat niraar — the Beautiful One stays far from them. Mohan means the One who wins every heart.

Changing your place or your clothes does not close the gap. Think of a sports shirt. Wearing your favorite player's shirt does not make you play like them. That takes practice and heart. Leaving the world is not the same as finding the One. The distance closes inside.

A Question to Sit With

Where might you be changing your outer circumstances hoping to fix something only the heart can reach?
