Beautiful Words Can Coexist With an Unchanged Heart

ਕਥਨ ਸੁਨਾਵਨ ਗੀਤ ਨੀਕੇ ਗਾਵਨ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਧਰਤੇ ਗਾਰ ॥੧॥
kathan sunaavan geet neekay gaavan man meh Dhartay gaar. ||1||
They talk, preach, and sing their lovely songs, but within their minds, the filth of their sins remains. ||1||

In plain words

They talk and preach and sing lovely songs, but inside, the grime of their wrongs stays.

Beautiful words and outer polish can coexist with an unchanged heart — what matters is the inner state, not the performance.
The deeper layer

People can say and sing beautiful holy words while their hearts stay the same inside.

Kathan sunaavan geet neekay gaavan — they talk, they preach, and they sing lovely songs. Man meh Dhartay gaar — but inside their minds they keep the dirt of their wrongs.

Beautiful words and a shiny outside can sit right next to a heart that has not changed. Think of a present in gorgeous wrapping paper with an empty box inside. The wrapping is lovely, but it is not the gift.

The shabad keeps its eyes on the one thing that matters. It is not the show on the outside. It is what is really going on inside.

A Question to Sit With

Could eloquence or a good performance ever be covering something inside that still needs changing?
